Inverter cures student wind problem

A breakdown of an old inverter brought student research to a stop at Coventry University. The inverter drives the airflow through a simple wind tunnel.

Inverter cures student wind problem

Lenze partner Modern Drives & Controls stepped in with an IP65 enclosed SMV inverter that does not need a panel for mounting. Two working days later the installation was complete and the wind tunnel was back in service.

The IP65 enclosed Lenze SMV inverters can be mounted without a panel in areas where there might be a splashed water or low pressure jets. They cover a power range from 0.25 to 7.5 kW with options for 1 and 3 phase supplies in a voltage range from 120 to 600 VAC. In this case the wind tunnel required a 0.75 kW drive for a single phase 240 VAC supply. SMV inverters are sensorless vector drives with high performance, for example 200% starting torque and a highly dynamic response.

Modern Drives & Controls are a Lenze StockDrives partner based in Leicester. Their Engineer selected the SMV model with an integrated and lockable isolator. The high enclosure rating allowed them to mount easily and safely to the front of the wind tunnel. There are many options for control including the simple keypad or connection of 0-10V, 4-20mA signals, a potentiometer or 8 preset speeds. Modern Drives & Controls made a demonstration on Friday. By the following Tuesday the inverter was delivered, installed and running.

Lenze SMV inverters are an excellent low cost option for variable speed control of ac motors as they are so simple to install and operate. Coventry University are delighted with their drive and the response from Modern Drives. They add that the fan now runs quieter than before and the lockable isolator is useful to prevent student abuse.
