College Promotes Cable Management Knowledge

While the skills shortage continues to top the list of electrical industry hot topics, one college in North Wales is making sure its students are completely au fait with the latest cable management best practice.

A further Education college offering ‘A’ Levels and apprenticeships as well as a wide range of full and part time courses, Deeside College has a busy engineering department, with more than 170 students passing through its electrical and mechanical engineering course each year. Much of the training offered is hands on and is taught by the course’s tutor, Chris Evans, in the college’s on-site workshop, where there is an area dedicated to helping the students understand the different types of cable they will need to work with.

“We used Cablofil steel wire tray for the containment in the workshop because it is so easy to use and so versatile,” comments Chris. “When I worked in the trade I used Cablofil tray extensively and found that it was suitable for a wide array of cables and could be easily shaped and fixed to ensure a safe and stable cable support in no time at all. The students can really get to grips with it quickly and, because they can see through the wire tray, it means that they can identify different types of cable at a glance.”

Cables in the workshop area at Deeside include armoured, flexible, twin earth and fire alarm cables, all of which have been contained within Cablofil tray. Feedback from the students has been complimentary, with many praising the product’s ease of use and lightweight strength.

“One of the great things about this course is that they teach us all the latest techniques and offer us plenty of hands on experience while we learn,” says M&E student Alex Yates. “The Cablofil tray is so easy to bend and shape that all the students on my course were able to start using it really quickly and it’s great to know that we’ll be able to use it for such a variety of different cables when we’re working on real installations.”
