Women in Engineering Get SummitSkills Backing

SummitSkills has become the first Sector Skills Council to sign the UK Resource Centre for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology’s (UKRC) CEO Charter, committing to increase the participation of women at all levels in building services engineering.

The Charter was launched in March last year by Malcolm Wicks, who was Minister for Science and Innovation and is a visible commitment by organisations to implement positive culture change and increase the participation and progression of women in the workplace. Signing up is a personal pledge from the chief executive of an organisation to actively support equality and diversity and promote best practice in gender equality.

SummitSkills has been actively working with UKRC since 2006, promoting gender equality internally and also to its member organisations. It has also held two regional gender equality training events for staff and local employers and colleges, as well as two interactive skills events for young women to demonstrate the high quality careers available in building services engineering.

Annette Williams, Director of the UKRC, said: “I am pleased that SummitSkills has become the first SSC to sign the charter, and we will now work with them to make further progress in changing workplace culture and increasing women’s participation.”

Keith Marshall OBE, the CEO of SummitSkills, said he was delighted to sign the Charter. He added: “A lot of good work has been done so far, but there is still a long way to go. In being the first Sector Skills Council to sign, we are demonstrating a strong commitment to continue our work with strategic partners, and to develop a diverse building services engineering sector where women can prosper and progress.”
