Don't Stop the Press!

Chloride has provided critical power protection at News International’s impressive new printing plant. The facility is believed to be the world's largest printing plant and houses the most advanced full colour printing presses. A 30MVA substation and energy centre has been built alongside the building to power the twelve Man 500 colour presses.

The size of the £187m plant in Broxbourne, north London, is staggering. It is the size of 23 football pitches and the twelve full-colour presses are each capable of producing 86,000 copies per hour which is more than double the capability of the presses in the old Wapping site. The triple-width presses can also print tabloid and broadsheet pages simultaneously, allowing greater flexibility with deadlines. The Broxbourne plant is part of a £650m initiative including plants in Knowsley, near Liverpool, and Motherwell, near Glasgow.

Maintaining power is mission critical for this high tech application, requiring a totally reliable uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system to guarantee maximum uptime. An optimum power protection system solution was provided with the installation of three Chloride 3 phase 400kVA 90-NET UPS units. These advanced high integrity UPS are extremely flexible, reliable and have enhanced ‘green’ credentials because of their high conversion efficiency. Digital vector control, in intelligent double conversion configuration, enables 90-NET to eliminate, in real time, all overloads, frequency variations, transient disturbances, brief interruptions and power outage incidents.

News International has also taken advantage of Chloride’s industry-leading LIFE.net remote monitoring and diagnostics service. Using specialised supervisory software, LIFE.net keeps the back-up power systems under continuous surveillance and reports their operational status back to the manufacturer’s constantly manned UK service centre. This advanced performance monitoring of the installed UPS systems and the mains supply provides real-time awareness and diagnosis of more than 100 separate operational parameters. It is an essential requirement for maintaining high power availability, as any anomalies are immediately identified and remedial action triggered. LIFE.net offers an enormous benefit to facilities managers as it means Chloride effectively takes responsibility for the health of the UPS.
