Improved Part P Qualification

Continuing demand for EAL’s Part P qualification has led to a detailed review to improve the quality even further. The Level 2 Certificate for Domestic Electrical Installers was pioneered in readiness for the 2005 Building Regulations, and the new version supports training providers in delivering the technical knowledge required for Part P Competent Persons Schemes.

Since 1st January 2005, domestic electrical installation work has come under the scope of Part P of the Building Regulations. Thousands of companies affected by the change can avoid the costly process of notifying electrical work by registering on Competent Persons Schemes. These government-licensed schemes allow ‘Qualified Supervisors’ to self-certify that domestic work is electrically safe and complies with the relevant standards.

EAL’s Level 2 Certificate for Domestic Electrical Installers is supported by the Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), the UK’s leading trade association for the electrical industry. The qualification is suitable for anyone carrying out electrical work under the scope of Part P, including kitchen and gas fitters. Successful candidates will gain the technical knowledge to be nominated as a ‘Qualified Supervisor’.

EAL is committed to maintaining the highest standard of qualifications, and a comprehensive review has engaged with training providers to update the materials from September 2008. The revised version includes:

 New regulations: the Certificate now interprets the relevant sections of the 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671: 2008) for domestic electrical installers.
 New structure: 9 coherent units make the original materials easier to interpret and use to deliver training
 New assessments: a choice of multiple choice question papers give centres more flexibility when conducting exams.

Unit 1 is also available as a separate award for domestic installers with proof of recognised electrical qualifications and whose knowledge and experience is up-to-date. Successful candidates will receive the Applicable Building Regulations Award (Part P), allowing them to confirm that their electrical installation meets the requirements of the Building Regulations.

The electrical industry relies on up-to-date training to help workers keep pace with changing legislation. EAL managing director, Ann Watson, explains: “Official estimates suggest that over 60,000 electrical contracting firms have been affected by Part P since 2005. EAL has worked closely with training providers to identify these improvements to one of our leading qualifications, and ensure that the structure, content and assessment methods continue to meet their needs.”

Iain Macdonald, Head of Education and Training at the ECA, agrees with the importance of flexible training options. “This qualification can be taken in its entirety or in separate modules. Those already proficient in the competencies can go straight to the final assessment for each module to achieve the VRQ and gain the full certificate.”
