Another Week, Another LED Breakthrough!
With the launch of Vio, its LED platform and product range, GE Lighting makes it possible to produce white light from an LED, without mixing colour sources. As a lighting solution, it is high-performing and completely stable, creating a quality of light comparable to the glow from a soft white incandescent lamp.
Introduced in the US last year and now set for roll-out across the EMEA region, Vio takes a new, revolutionary approach to the creation of white light. Taking a 405 nm violet chip as its base, Vio utilises a multi-phosphor to convert the violet light into visible white light. By employing a single-material solution, the platform avoids the variable deterioration patterns that invariably occur with multiple source products.
“OEMs, lighting designers and end-users want stability of light. Vio addresses that issue,” says Andy Davies, GE’s product manager for solid state lighting for the EMEA region. “A number of lighting designers who use LEDs frequently have told us that it is the best quality of light that they have seen from an LED.”
Reduced cost of ownership and maintenance is another of Vio’s many advantages. A rating of 50,000 hours means that payback on investment can be achieved in a mere two years. If ever there was a product series suited to these economically pressurised times, then this is it.
Facilitating considerable flexibility in colour temperature and CRI, Vio is also eminently suitable for adaption and incorporation by OEMs. “It should be very attractive to OEMs who want to use LEDs and who understand optics and light, but who don’t necessarily have the resources to interface between the LED and the circuit board,” explains Davies. “They can add value through their expertise with optics, but they don’t need to recruit electronics engineers or sub-contract the interfacing to another company.”
