Help is at Hand for REACH Registration

Cambridge Environmental Assessments (CEA), part of the Environmental consultancy ADAS UK Ltd, has developed a unique service to help take the pressure out of REACH registration for UK organisations who are preparing to meet the requirements of the new EU Chemicals legislation. Failure to comply in time
could mean a ban on trading in Europe.

The new Chemicals regulation concerns the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals (REACH), and is designed to control the exposure of chemical substances in the workplace, to the environment and the public.

All organisations involved in the manufacture, import and use of chemicals as single substances, in preparations or in articles with an intended release, are now required to identify and notify their use throughout the supply chain, and must register all such substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECA) before the legislative deadlines between January 2009 and May 2018.

However, completing the registration dossier in the official IUCLID 5* software can be time-consuming, expensive and complicated. It requires the manufacturer, importer or another company in the supply chain to set up their own IUCLID 5 system. There will be extra costs in setting up the software, maintaining it and
finding trained personnel to enter the necessary data in order to complete the registration dossier.

Under the present economic climate these are costs that companies will wish to minimise or avoid.

In response, CEA is offering access to a secure online IUCLID 5 system which will provide organisations with the necessary registration dossier preparation capability, consultancy support and IT assistance, so that the dossier preparation should be completed in time to meet the REACH registration deadlines.

Peter Godfrey, CEA's REACH Business Manager, comments: "REACH will replace more than 40 individual current EU directives, and looks set to completely reform the way chemicals are managed. The registration of chemicals is a costly and complex process for industry, but it is nevertheless essential - failure to meet the regulation deadlines will mean a ban on trading substances anywhere within the EU.

"Our new service will take away the need for organisations to directly invest in an IUCLID 5 IT system". Also they will gain access to consultancy support. Registration should become easier and they should be ready in plenty of time to meet the legislative deadlines.

"Cambridge Environmental Assessments (CEA), part of ADAS, has been assisting industry since the legislation was first published in 2006, advising on all aspects REACH and delivering tailored support in order to help prepare clients for the registration of their products. Therefore, we are ideally placed to
offer an on-line registration and consultancy service."
