Scolmore Flameguard Low Energy Downlights

Scolmore International has supplied low energy downlighters from its Flameguard range for the new £4.3 million Churnet and Rutland House residential development in Derby. It’s all part of a £2 billion regeneration
programme being pioneered by urban regeneration company Derby Cityscape in partnership with the local council.

The old Churnet House railway office block in Derby was proving to be a problem. It occupied a prominent spot in the city centre and had gone from being an asset to being long unused. Together with its neighbour The Old Rutland Arms, a redundant and boarded-up pub, it needed a serious makeover.

Rather than go for wholesale demolition, developers decided to keep and re-use as much as possible so Churnet House with its red brick Victorian architecture was saved to become brand new apartments and The Old Rutland Arms was demolished to make way for Rutland House, which adjoins Churnet House.
Together, the two sites will provide 53 new homes for rent, shared ownership and outright sale. The project has recently been nominated for a Housing Excellence Award 2008 for the Best New Affordable Housing Scheme of the Year.

Scolmore’s 11W CF409 and CF400 low energy downlighters have been installed in the Rutland House section of the refurbishment, in a total of 36 apartments. Part of the Flameguard range, these chrome, premium quality fittings have been designed for use with the latest energy saving lamps. Once installed, Flameguard protected downlighters offer long term protection against the spread of fire, without the need for secondary inspection to ensure that the seal is in place. The seal is an integral part of the downlighter and requires no further action over and above installation.

Andy Hadnum from contractors on the project Mitchell and Hewitt commented, “The lighting was essential in
creating a clean, contemporary feel for the apartments, whilst offering good energy efficiency and low maintenance. Scolmore were extremely helpful and offered an excellent product at a reasonable price”.
