This month sees the 8th annual HazardEx conference and exhibition which will be held at the Majestic Hotel, Harrogate, North Yorkshire. Running on the 25th and 26th February 2009, the event will pull together all aspects of the hazardous area market, including much to interest people associated with the electrical industry.

Among those exhibiting will be industry leaders such as Siemens Automation & Drives, ABB Engineering Services, Cooper-Crouse Hinds and Werma, who will all be on hand to show you the latest innovations in hazardous area electrical equipment. Entrance to the exhibition only is FREE to visitors who register and includes entrance to the sponsor’s technical workshops.

Both days of the conference will also feature talks from some of the most respected and knowledgeable from the industry. Tim Marks from the Association Electrical Mechanical Trades will deliver a conference paper on explosive atmospheres and the electrical installation inspections that need to be carried out in these locations.

Also Jeff Wood, Lead Electrical Engineer at Ineos Chlor will discuss the designing and operating of hazardous area plant and legacy systems to IEC 61508. This talk will describe the project processes used for the specification and design of the safety-instrumented system for a new major hazards plant in the UK. However, it will concentrate on the concerns raised by the HSE during their specialist inspection of the system as part of the plant’s COMAH assessment and will point out possible pitfalls to avoid.

The comprehensive two day conference will give everyone involved in safety for engineering plant, insight and case study examples of how peers have executed safety programmes in their facilities. As always the programme will provide detailed standards/legislation updates directly from those involved in the process of creating them.

Conference speakers include experts from:
Ineos Chlor
BAE Systems
FM Global

Day Two (Functional Safety focus) will be chaired by Ron Bell OBE – formerly head of the Electrical & Control Systems Group at the UK’s HSE and now an independent consultant. Ron, who is also Chairman of the working group responsible for the revision of IEC 61508, will present an insight into the workings of functional safety now and in the future.
