New Manufacturing Facility Opens in the North East

Thorn has officially opened its new manufacturing plant in Spennymoor, County Durham. The £28m site, with additional £1.3m training academy represents the largest single investment Thorn’s parent company, the Zumbotel Group, has made and will provide secure jobs for 700 employees in the North East.

The 40,000 sq m plant boasts state of the art machinery and processes in the production of Thorn’s lighting units including robotic wiring technology and laser sheet metal cutting.

Taking 2 years to complete, the new Spennymoor facility replaces the nearby old factory which became too small to cater for Thorn’s increasing needs. The company will now have additional space to cope with changing demands as well as providing onsite training through the academy.

Commenting on the opening, local MP Helen Goodman (pictured) said: “Thorn have been in Spennymoor for over 50 years, they are a valued local employer, and this kind of investment shows that even in the current economic climate, innovative companies like Thorn still have real confidence in the future of the local economy.”
