Jung Anti Bacterial Switches

Home automation and electrical accessories company, Jung, has launched a revolutionary new range of light switches which can actually help to prevent the spread of infection.

Designed for use in hospitals, health centres, nursing homes and schools, the innovative AS 500 Antibacterial Switches use the antimicrobial properties of silver ions embedded within thermosetting plastic to inhibit the reproduction of bacteria and fungi.

Barry Bilclough of Jung UK explains: “Dangerous microbes can be passed easily from person to person on light switches because they come off the hand of one person onto the switch and then onto the hand of the next person.  While conventional switches are a breeding ground for pathogenic germs the Jung antibacterial range of switches stops the reproduction and mutation of these cells, aiding infection control.”

Hardwearing and suitable for use in demanding environments, the material used to create Jung’s AS 500 Antibacterial range ensures that the switches offer protection from a wide variety of pathogenic germs for many years without the use of any chemical coatings. Atmospheric moisture triggers a release mechanism within the plastic’s structure sending silver ions to the surface of the switch on a continuous basis to ensure that it is always effective with no maintenance or adjustments required.

In addition to wide-ranging applications across hospitals, health centres and nursing homes where reducing the spread of infections is an ongoing challenge, Jung expects  the technology to be equally beneficial in any location where switches are likely to be used by a number of different people.  As a result, the company will also target hotels, private day nurseries, education providers and commercial offices.

The AS 500 Antibacterial range provides all the options available from Jung’s standard AS 500 range of switches and sockets, using the company’s distinctive square styling.  The only visible difference is a small blue ‘plus’ sign on the frame to indicate the product’s antibacterial properties.

“They may look like humble light switches,” Barry continues, “but the AS 500 Antibacterial switches could be responsible for helping to control nasty bacteria such as Staphylococcus Aureus (the MRSA bacteria), the Escherichia Coli (the E. Coli which gives you food poisoning) and the C. Difficle the sickness and diaorhea bug commonly spread in hospitals.  We think that they are an important new weapon in infection control which will work alongside current best practice in cleaning and hand washing to improve public health.”
