Exhibitions to showcase Bio Trunking Solutions

Healthcare specifiers and estates/facilities managers attending two forthcoming exhibitions will be able to see at first hand a unique antimicrobial cable management system that is effective against dangerous bacteria found in hospitals.

Exhibitions to showcase Bio Trunking Solutions

Cable management market-leader Marshall-Tufflex is exhibiting its Bio Trunking Solutions at the Infection Control 2 Exhibition, Barbican Conference Centre, London on October 1, and at the Scottish Healthcare Conference and Awards on November 12/13 at the Crieff Hydro Hotel, Perthshire.

The PVC-U cable management is impregnated with a silver-based antimicrobial agent that is proven to be 99.9% effective against many dangerous bacteria, including MRSA, E-Coli, Salmonella and Klebsiella pneumoniae. If someone carrying one of these bugs touches the treated PVC-U, bacteria transferred to the trunking begins to die, minimising the risk of cross-contamination and patients contracting healthcare associated infections (HCAIs). On untreated products, the harmful bacteria will grow.

Because the antimicrobial ingredient is mixed into the PVC-U rather than applied as a surface coating, it continues to work if the plastic is scratched or damaged, and will remain 100% effective throughout the life of the trunking as it does not leach out or suffer reduction in performance over time.

Bio Trunking Solutions have been tested to the quantitative standard ISO 22196:2007. Results show the survival rate of tested bacteria to be less than 0.1%. It is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and compliant with the European Biocidal Products Directive (BPD).

The system can be integrated with many of Marshall-Tufflex’s trunking profiles. However, when specified with the manufacturer’s unique, all-curved Odyssey cable containment, it offers healthcare environments a tremendous opportunity to minimise the risk of cross-contamination, as Marshall-Tufflex product manager Chris Scott explained: "Not only is Odyssey Bio’s curved profile good looking, it does not allow clutter such as mugs and other items to be placed on the trunking.. A clutter-free trunking is far easier to clean, reducing the opportunity for bacteria to grow, particularly when treated with the antimicrobial agent.

"Quite obviously there is no substitute for meticulous cleaning regimes and scrupulous personal hygiene in healthcare environments such as hospitals," added Mr Scott. "However, Bio Trunking Solutions are an additional weapon that can be used to great effect in the fight against superbugs and other infections."

To enable specifiers to make a properly informed decision, Marshall-Tufflex commissioned a report from an eminent and leading UK microbiologist, entitled ‘Specifying Cable Containment Systems with Antimicrobial Properties: what you need to know’.
