Software does hard graft

Eyre & Elliston is a UK based independent electrical wholesaler. Originally founded in 1934, Eyre & Elliston now has 60 local branches providing coverage from Burnley in the North West, Newcastle in the North East, down to Brighton, Ashford and Canterbury on the South coast.

Software does hard graft

They are a leading supplier of electrical installation, lighting, control and distribution equipment, with a customer base that includes electrical contractors, the manufacturing industry, local and national government organisations, public bodies, garden centres - in fact, anyone with a need for electrical products.

The decision to choose ADP’s system was a commercial one. The system had to be user-friendly for Eyre & Elliston’s sales operation and also a workable tool for their various accounts departments. It was chosen because of its trading functionality - the sales side of the system needed to support the customer facing side of the organisation, first and foremost, given that Eyre & Elliston is an extremely busy business environment.

Eyre & Elliston has grown with a series of new and acquired branches (from 7 through to 40). Up until the millennium, most sites were still operating a manual system, with paperwork being forwarded by post to the Head Office for entry on to the old computer system.

The objective was to replace the remaining legacy computer systems and make the manual processes redundant in all 60 branches, as the cost and administration involved was unacceptable. One of the crucial factors to the system decision was to ensure the associated costs did not exceed current administration overheads.

The solution was to roll out the ADP system across all branches in the shortest possible time frame. The stock checking functionality of the ADP system is a major advantage to Eyre & Elliston. What used to take up to three months, going through multiple levels of validation (including sign-off by a Regional Director) is now a thing of the past. The ADP system, alone, saves two manmonths every year. In addition, they are impressed with the accuracy of the system in comparison to other wholesaler systems on the market.

The inter-branch stock visibility is very clear and makes picking stock extremely simple for staff at Eyre & Elliston. As products change constantly, within this industry, the ADP system ensures that obsolescent items can be shifted very quickly and stock holding is kept down to a minimum.
Credit Control, who used to get over 100 calls a day requesting copies of ‘lost’ invoices, now provide a service that enables customers to view and re-print copies of their original invoices over the Internet. The ADP Commercial Systems application has made this possible for Eyre & Elliston, as it forms an important part of their continual improvement in customer service.

"No new system should increase your costs," comments John Eyre, Managing Director of Eyre & Elliston. "We need a financially stable provider who is progressive and willing to invest in the future so that we can grow with them. In fact, the ADP system has helped us in the successful growth and development of our business."
