Load bank testing to ensure generator reliability
Installation of a generator system normally involves significant capital expenditure to provide a secure supply for critical loads.
Once the installation is installed and commissioned, there is a requirement for ongoing maintenance. This normally involves a weekly or monthly simulated mains failure when the generator is tested off-load, combined with two annual service visits for carrying out the mechanical and electrical maintenance. The ongoing reliability and ability to start when required is heavily dependent upon the correct maintenance regimes.
When testing engines off-load, there is a tendency for the engine cylinders to glaze, effectively reducing the life of the generator. This, combined with gaskets and manifolds not running at full temperature, can cause oil leaks - a phenomenon termed “slobbering”.
As part of the maintenance, AVK strongly recommends that either a 6 monthly or, as a minimum, 12 monthly intervals, the generator is exercised on load using a load bank. These are mobile units rated up to 1100kW. Larger units are available, housed within ISO containers and can be supplied in either resistive or reactive designs. The correct maintenance of generators ensures optimum life and high start availability, ensuring the best integrity and reliability for protecting critical loads.
AVK have a full fleet of load banks available for hire and can combine load bank testing within their service maintenance contracts.
