Rhona Brankin opens SELECT's two-million pound centre of excellence

Midlothian MSP Rhona Brankin has officially opened a two-million pound extension of the corporate headquarters of SELECT, Scotland's trade association for the electrical contracting industry. The former Minister and Labour education spokesperson officiated at a ceremony attended by senior figures in the Scottish construction industry at The Walled Garden on Midlothian's prestigious Bush Estate.

Rhona Brankin opens SELECT's two-million pound centre of excellence

The extension, a sustainable and carbon-friendly two-storey building, will create a centre of excellence for the building services industry and become a hub for the development and introduction of cutting edge technologies which are transforming the building sector.

Finished in September last year and supporting new jobs for Midlothian, the new building nearly doubles in size the SELECT head quarters at The Walled Garden and allows the relocation of industry organisations within the building and the accessing of new and expansion-ready accommodation by the host organisation.

Rhona Brankin said: "SELECT is once again setting the pace in terms of being alert to the needs and ambitions of its industry sector and taking positive and constructive steps to meet these requirements.

"It has always placed fundamental emphasis on setting the highest standards and this remarkable new building maintains that position, as well as supporting high quality jobs in Midlothian. As Midlothian's MSP, I am delighted to wish SELECT well in its new enterprise and for further successes in the future."

The new building will accommodate new and existing tenant companies, including the electrical industry's training organisation SECTT and the Heating and Ventilating Contractors' Association, as well as the Electrical Safety Council BEST, the training organisation for the heating and ventilating sector and SummitSkills, the sector skills council for both industries.

In an illustration of the industry-wide support which SELECT has attracted over recent years, Unite the Union will take space in the new building alongside Bilfinger Berger PI, a leading internationally active construction and services company.

Newell McGuiness, Managing Director of SELECT, said: "This ambitious project will have the effect of bringing together the building services sector into a custom-designed location to create an unrivalled centre of excellence for the industry.

"It will cater for our ever-expanding membership, now in excess of 1200 companies, and will provide unrivalled training facilities, particularly in the more advanced sustainable and carbon neutral technologies which are transforming the way our sector operates.

"SELECT has always been at the forefront of technological innovation in industry and the splendid new facilities which have been created in this extension will allow us to maintain the highest possible standards of safety and efficiency as well as delivering an unparalleled service to our members.

"It sends out a message that the electrotechnical sector in Scotland is in good health and looking forward to meeting the challenges of the future."
