Cornish Theme Park Saves 12 Tonnes of Co2 Per Year
The Flambards Experience, a Cornish amusement park, has almost halved its lighting outlay, after undertaking an energy-efficient lighting installation using innovative retrofit device, 'Save It Easy®'. As a result, the theme park has cut its electricity costs by more than £2,200 a year, while saving 12 tonnes of carbon each year.
With rides, exhibitions, video arcades, cafes and restaurants, The Flambards Experience site has understandably high energy demands. However, Flambards' environmentally-friendly ethos led them to seek advice on limiting their energy use. Sustainability consultancy, Lightwater Environmental Ltd, helped Flambards to obtain a loan from the Carbon Trust to finance an energy-efficient lighting installation.
Flambards chose a Carbon-Trust-approved retrofit product, Save It Easy, in order to install 349 energy-efficient lamps of varying sizes across its site. By using Save It Easy, a plug-in device from Energys Ltd, Flambards was able to retain its existing light fittings - an important consideration, since the theme park wished to avoid disruption and downtime.
The higher efficiency of the low-energy lamps, plus the more efficient control gear in the Save It Easy units, will allow Flambards to save approximately £2,200 each year on its electricity bills. The previous fluorescent lighting power use of 54,000kW per annum has been dramatically reduced to 32,000kW. Accordingly, the carbon footprint of Flambards has also been reduced, with annual savings of 12 tonnes of carbon.
Paul Morris, Technical Services Manager at Flambards, comments: "The Save It Easy units were simple enough to install that our onsite team could easily handle all the installation work. We were concerned whether the new lamps would be bright enough, but the light quality has turned out to be even better than before. We've also found the Save It Easy equipment so durable that, in the nine months since the installation, we have had to carry out no lighting maintenance."
Aidan Salter, Managing Director of Energys, comments: "By working in partnership with Lightwater Environmental Ltd, a member of our recently-launched Partner Programme, we were able to offer The Flambards Experience an energy-saving solution that fitted with their sustainability agenda, but did not jeopardise the day-to-day running of the site."
What's more, Flambards' calculations, verified by the Carbon Trust, show that the energy-efficient lighting project is likely to achieve payback in less than three years.
