New shatterproof lamp standard brings business opportunity to electrical wholesalers

Author : Chris Payne - GlassGuard

It’s been a long time coming but finally IEC61549 for Fragment Retention Fluorescent Lamps became effective during April 2010 bringing new commercial opportunities for electrical wholesalers.

Food manufacturers and retailers, who are the most common users of shatterproof lamps, are being urged by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) to take up this new performance standard to ensure that all areas where food is handled and processed are properly protected.

IEC61549 demands coatings provide, full glass containment from a 4M drop test, a minimum of 8,000 hours coating service life and withstand the 650°C Glow Wire Test.

Industry expert Chris Payne from GlassGuard, the industry leader said: "This new standard will certainly remove the use of PET covered shrink wrapped lamps that do not contain glass past 5,000 hours of use.

He went on to say: "While the new standard requires 8000hrs service life, GlassGuard Black Band coatings offer the full 20,000hrs service life matching the service life of the best Tri- Phosphor lamps."

Electrical wholesalers now have a new business opportunity to offer their clients a high performance solution with a full payback over 20,000 hrs, thereby improving safety, and avoiding costly down-time due to glass contamination from lamp breakage.

In an economic climate where profitable business is hard to find the new standard IEC61549 offers the pro-active wholesaler a chance to give a worthwhile boost to his profitability.

By only specifying to their clients GlassGuard Black Band lamps, wholesalers will bring to all concerned a ‘win win’ solution in terms of safety, cost avoidance and profit
