Swindon council adds wireless CO alarms to its housing stock

Swindon Borough Council has made the decision to replace its existing smoke alarms, across its 10,500 properties, with Aico RadioLINK Professional alarms. Aico Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms will also be installed for the first time, interlinked with the smoke alarms. The systems will be managed through Aico Alarm Control Switches.

The existing smoke alarms are coming to the end of their working lives. Swindon Borough Council is replacing them with optical smoke alarms with RadioLINK bases, allowing the alarms to be wirelessly interconnected. In houses, one alarm is fitted per floor, on the upstairs landing and in the downstairs hallway. When one alarm activates, it will send a radio frequency signal to trigger the other alarm, ensuring the warning can be heard throughout the property.

James Porch, Housing Property Maintenance for Swindon Borough Council, chose the 160RC Series alarms along with RadioLINK bases because he believes they they are reliable, easy and quick to install and the wireless option eliminates the need to lift floor boards and install unnecessary trunking."

This is not a completely new development for the Council, as Swindon completed
its previous smoke alarm installation programme using Aico's RadioLINK system
shortly after the product was launched. The Council was impressed with the
results which led to the decision to install RadioLINK throughout its housing stock
as alarms reach the end of their working lives.

What is completely new though is the Council's additional installation of CO
alarms as an added safety measure for tenants. The new RadioLINK CO alarm was chosen for this purpose as it not only has all the features and quality build that professionals have come to expect from Aico alarms, but incorporates RadioLINK Professional wireless interconnection for the very first time. This allows it to wirelessly interconnect to the smoke alarms so that when the CO alarm detects dangerous levels of CO, all the alarms interconnected on the system will sound. This is important as a CO alarm is generally away from a bedroom area so may not be heard if there is a CO incident when occupants are asleep.

An Aico wall-mounted Alarm Control Switch is being installed in properties to
allow residents to quickly locate the exact alarm which has detected the fire or
CO leak and take appropriate action. The Switch is completely wireless and can
also be used to test all the alarms on the system as well as silencing the alarms if they are accidentally triggered.

The alarm installation work is being carried out by Shield Electrical Services as part of Swindon Borough Council's housing upgrade programme and will be rolled on yearly.
