Gresham Power Electronics wins major defence contract

The Gresham Power Electronics battery charging systems have been designed into the Scorpène class submarines by the major French contractor for naval shipbuilding and support, DCN and the Spanish shipbuilder Navantia.

Scorpène submarines are a class of diesel-electric attack submarine jointly developed by DCN and Navantia. They feature diesel propulsion and an optional additional air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. Scorpène class submarines are virtually undetectable and patrol the sea at depths of 350m, traveling at high speed for long periods of time while remaining perfectly aware of everything around them. The modular nature of the design makes it as easy to tailor the submarine to customers' specific requirements and to include the latest technological innovations to maintain operational superiority. The design has been sold to a number of foreign navies and the current Contract is one such.

Jake Moir, Managing Director of Gresham Power Electronics (pictured) said: "This is a major new contract for Gresham Power and a follow on to previous orders in support of Scorpène. It demonstrates not only our advanced technical capabilities but is a reflection of our customers confidence in our equipment and a testament to our many years of experience of and commitment to Naval power conversion and distribution."
