RCD sockets and spurs - Still making good sense and good business

RCD protected sockets continue to fly off the shelves – it’s a business opportunity you should not be missing out on, says Timeguard, who have just introduced the new Valiance range of RCD protected sockets and spurs.

RCD sockets and spurs - Still making good sense and good business

The new range combines trusted technology and a look and feel which is bang up to date. Say goodbye to clunky old designs and show the installers at your counter modern sockets that they can choose with confidence for their customers’ homes, shops and workplaces.

Protecting all circuits of a domestic installation with RCD’s fitted into the circuit board has been mandatory in the UK since 2008, and you might think this would mean a declining market for RCD protected sockets, but the wholesalers’ sales figures say otherwise. There is still huge potential in older unprotected properties and many people in new or refurbished buildings – especially businesses and schools - will prefer to have the additional protection of a second line of defence and install protection at the socket as well as at the main board or household consumer unit.

RCD protected sockets may cost more than a simple socket, but when safety is at issue, few people will object.

About RCD protection

A residual-current device (RCD), similar to a Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), is an electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the energized conductor and the return neutral conductor. Such an imbalance is sometimes caused by current leakage through the body of a person who is grounded and accidentally touching the energized part of the circuit. A lethal shock can result from these conditions so RCDs are designed to disconnect quickly – 30 milliseconds is typical - before an electric shock can drive the heart into ventricular fibrillation, the most common cause of death through electric shock.

Remember that they will not provide protection against overload or short-circuit conditions.

Types of RCD wiring accessories: active and passive

Different types of RCDs behave differently after the circuit they are protecting is de-energised or tripped. Be sure to choose the right type.

Passive or latching RCD sockets are for use where power must be restored immediately after a power failure – to a fridge freezer, for instance.

Active or non-latching versions are for use where safety considerations mean that appliances must only be switched back on after they have been checked, you are sure that all fingers and toes are clear and the socket has been manually reset – power tools which may have been left with the switch in the ‘on’ position for instance, lawn mowers or domestic heaters.

Valiance – why the difference matters

RCD’s offer additional safety against the dangers of electrocution and so choosing the right RCD for the job does matter. RCD technology, like any other technology, is subject to continuous improvement and advances, and Timeguard’s new Valiance range brings a range of additional benefits to the user.

Firstly, good looks do matter and the Timeguard designers have come up trumps again – just as they did with the Vision range of covered outdoor IP66 power sockets, which still stand head and shoulders above competitors in the design stakes and no-one else has been able to emulate the patented seal technology that was a real design breakthrough. The Valiance RCD wiring accessories come from the same in-house R&D team at Timeguard, and will look good in any home, office or workplace.

There’s more, however, to these new designs than a cosmetic makeover. Timeguard has added colour-coded wiring terminals for even easier & safer wiring. The sockets also feature twin earth terminals, they automatically disconnect both Live and Neutral connections leaving the Earth connections intact and still protect even with lost Neutral. Of course, there can be no compromise on build quality and it will always be easier to sell products that are all about safety when they come from a company with a known and trusted name that is willing to put its own reputation on the line. So confident of the Valiance range is Timeguard that it guarantees the Valiance range for a full 5 years. British Standards compliance should of course be a given for any RCD product.

Lower cost of sales
Valiance RCDs cover all the RCD wiring accessory options you’ll need from surface mounted heavy-duty metal sockets to sleek white wall sockets and fused spurs. One range, one supplier and one lot of administration mean lower costs for you.

Timeguard also makes life easier for your counter staff, by packing its products in durable and attractive boxes and blister packs that include photographs and full specification details so installers can see at a glance what they are buying. It can all add up to hours of time saved for your staff – time they can be using to make more sales….so do check out the rest of the range at www.timeguard.com.

Even with all this added value, pricing is keen and competitive, and Valiance RCD sockets and accessories ought to be your number one choice this winter. With an intensive marketing and advertising campaign backing the launch, you can expect your customers to be looking for them.
