RCD sockets and spurs - Still making good sense and good business

Protecting all circuits of a domestic installation with RCD’s fitted into the circuit board has been mandatory in the UK since 2008, and you might think this would mean a declining market for RCD protected sockets, but the wholesalers’ sales figures say otherwise. About RCD protection
A residual-current device (RCD), similar to a Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB), is an electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the energized conductor and the return neutral conductor. Such an imbalance is sometimes caused by current leakage through the body of a person who is grounded and accidentally touching the energized part of the circuit. A lethal shock can result from these conditions so RCDs are designed to disconnect quickly – 30 milliseconds is typical - before an electric shock can drive the heart into ventricular fibrillation, the most common cause of death through electric shock.
Remember that they will not provide protection against overload or short-circuit conditions.
Types of RCD wiring accessories: active and passive
Different types of RCDs behave differently after the circuit they are protecting is de-energised or tripped. Be sure to choose the right type.
Passive or latching RCD sockets are for use where power must be restored immediately after a power failure – to a fridge freezer, for instance.
Active or non-latching versions are for use where safety considerations mean that appliances must only be switched back on after they have been checked, you are sure that all fingers and toes are clear and the socket has been manually reset – power tools which may have been left with the switch in the ‘on’ position for instance, lawn mowers or domestic heaters.
