Lighting consumption cut by 40%
National Savings and Investments is benefiting from a 40% cut in lighting consumption at one of its operational offices in Blackpool. This follows the installation of lighting management systems from Ex-Or, part of Honeywell, carried out during an extension and upgrade to one of NS&I's buildings designed to reduce operational costs and improve energy efficiency.
Ex-Or's lighting controls played a significant part in helping NS&I lift their Energy Performance Certificate rating of the building from a D to a B rating, and to raise its BREEAM ranking from "pass" to "very good".
Increasingly, large organisations such as NS&I are turning to lighting control to eliminate the unnecessary use of lighting in their buildings, so helping them meet their environmental commitments under schemes such as BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) and the CRC (Carbon Reduction Commitment).
At the NS&I Blackpool office, Ex-Or's MLS Digital Managed Lighting System was specified by M & E consultants Steven A Hunt Associates of Liverpool. The system was installed throughout the renovated parts of the building in open plan office areas, conference areas and some corridors.
The Ex-Or MLS Digital Managed Lighting System provides fully integrated lighting management which uses communicating presence detectors that share information on occupancy patterns throughout the building. This means it automatically provides optimum lighting conditions and maximum flexibility.
Steven A Hunt Associates managing director Steve Hunt explained: "NS&I wanted lighting control, but we wanted to take this one step further. We wanted to design in lighting schemes that would effectively illuminate common working zones and designated exit routes - from work station to exit or washroom facilities, for example.
"We have specified Ex-Or's Digital MLS Managed Lighting System in other schemes and we knew it was completely capable of achieving these aims for us. So by using Ex-Or MLS we were able not only to meet the client's brief to reduce the building's carbon footprint but also to provide the optimum lit environment for staff."
Ex-Or lighting control was one of a number of technologies employed during the building upgrade. The overall result is that NS&I is benefiting from a carbon saving of 51 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. This amounts to an annual saving on energy bills of £12,957.
Analysis of lighting usage within the building shows that before the installation of Ex-Or's systems, consumption was 58,101 Kwh. Following the Ex-Or installation, lighting consumption was reduced by 40%.
