If the UK is to achieve its energy and carbon reduction targets over the coming years, it is essential that lighting, responsible for the largest consumption of electrical energy in domestic dwellings and commercial/industrial applications, contributes to that process. It has considerable potential to do that based on the rapid development of technologies and, at the same time, to substantially reduce running costs for users.
Lou Bedocs, Honorary LIF President presented the awards at the high profile ceremony to the winning and highly commended entries, in a variety of application categories including indoor workplaces, outdoor workplaces, street lighting, sports, facades and new opportunities. The awards celebrated the tremendous potential of lighting to reduce energy consumption with savings ranging from 25 to 95%. There was a special award for the best example of the management of the recycling of old products taken out of a specific installation. This particular award was jointly sponsored by Lumicom and Recolight, the dedicated WEEE Compliance Schemes for the Lighting Industry.
The EMILAS scheme focuses on recognising and awarding lighting refurbishment schemes that demonstrate significant energy savings (and therefore significant reductions in cost for end-users) without compromising the quality of the lighting i.e. ensuring it is fit for purpose.
