Devondale celebrates 30 years with new branch

Author : J GALE

‘Unsung hero’ launches apprenticeship scheme: South West based Devondale Electrical Distributors Limited is celebrating 30 years in business by opening a new branch in Glastonbury bringing the total number of branches to six.

The new branch is located at Wirral Park, Glastonbury opposite Travis Perkins builder’s merchants and amidst a wide range of DIY, building supplies outlets and trade counter units.

The independent electrical wholesaler, which specialises in same day delivery because of its policy of high stock availability, employs some 50 staff and has an annual turnover in excess of £6 million.

With support from the Electrical Distributors Association, Devondale has also used its anniversary year to launch an apprenticeship scheme and, having already taken on two recruits, it is looking for three more young people aged between 16-21 to train for a new career.

Managing director Paul Wood said: "Trading is challenging for everyone right now but the combination of being very customer focussed and ensuring we have high levels of the right stock immediately, has maintained our profile and our profitability.

"Opening a branch in Glastonbury is a strategic expansion aimed at a mid market drawn from the small to medium sized towns in that part of Somerset. The large towns are somewhat over-supplied with the very large electrical wholesalers but the catchment of Glastonbury reflects our target market very well.

"We are also very excited by the new apprenticeship scheme. It is appropriate that as we enter our 30th year in business, we continue to build for the future offering the opportunity for new talent to join Devondale and build their own career."

Sean Grinsted, a partner at Chartered Accountants Francis Clark LLP who advises Devondale commented: "Devondale is a successful business and one of the unsung heroes of the regional economy. They are consistently profitable and reliable employers. Despite a difficult economic backdrop, they are prepared to invest in the business and, under Paul, they have a clear vision for the future.

"It is particularly gratifying that at a time when businesses are announcing redundancies, here we have one that is generating work for young people through an apprenticeship scheme."

Devondale operates two branches in Exeter with others at Barnstaple, Taunton and Torbay. The Glastonbury branch opens in mid-March. Devondale also runs its own trade show which will take place at Powderham Castle on June 22nd 2011.
