Eaton’s Intelligent Power Manager software is the first in the industry to integrate with XenCenter virtualisation architecture

Users of XenCenter can monitor and manage their power and network devices from the same system dashboard, reducing infrastructure and operating costs while increasing productivity and operational responsiveness. XenCenter is a Windows client management console for XenServer.

“Virtualisation is driving the deployment of many new applications and data centre demands. Additionally, managing the power infrastructure within a virtual platform is vital for increased uptime and reliability of those applications,” said Hervé Tardy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Eaton’s Distributed Power Quality Division.

“The integration of Intelligent Power Manager with XenCenter gives the users of virtual machines the best of both worlds — comprehensive remote monitoring capabilities that also streamline management, reduce response time and substantially increase uptime. Our work with XenCenter will give users the ability to manage and monitor their power devices and virtual infrastructure within the same application,” concluded Tardy.

Within XenCenter there is an Eaton power tab that allows IT managers to view connected power devices from the XenCenter dashboard. This function gives data centre and IT managers the ability to quickly monitor and manage all of their power devices across the virtual network from the XenCenter dashboard, eliminating the need to open multiple screens for various applications.

In addition to monitoring and managing power equipment across the enterprise, customers can now view critical power information such as the status of uninterruptible power systems (UPS’s), power distribution units (ePDU products) and environmental sensors from the central XenCenter screen. As a part of this integration, when a physical host server experiences a prolonged power interruption, XenCenter’s XenMotion application will transparently move virtual machines from the affected server to an available server on the network, ensuring data integrity and zero downtime.

Intelligent Power Manager, which is also integrated with VMware’s VCenter Server and Microsoft’s SCVMM, presents a combined view of the main operating parameters of all UPS’s, which can be easily configured according to the type of UPS, location, operating status and other user-defined factors.

Eaton’s Intelligent Power Protector, a part of the Intelligent Power Software Suite, is also compatible with XenServer and provides graceful shutdown capabilities in the event of an extended power outage.
