New school contract win

Apex Wiring Solutions has won a major contract to supply modular wiring systems for a multi-million pound school redevelopment project in Nottingham.

The contract will see the Durham-based firm design, manufacture and supply the modular wiring system, featuring pre-wired distribution boards, fully pluggable lighting and power units throughout, for two new teaching blocks being built at Ellis Guilford School.

The building work at the school is part of Nottingham Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, a £300 million Public Private partnership which aims to provide new educational facilities as part of a city wide social and economic regeneration initiative.

The modular wiring will be installed in a tight, eight week timeframe, which will see mechanical and electrical engineering company Shepherd Engineering Services Limited (SES) fitting over 20 pre-wired distribution boards and more than 8,000 metres of lighting and power pre-wired cables among hundreds of modular wiring components.

According to Building Cost Information Service research on behalf of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, only 63% of site-based construction projects are delivered on time and only 49% are delivered to budget. Offsite modular construction represents a step change in how buildings are designed and built because they make the process quicker and more cost effective.

Apex has used the latest software to design a bespoke system which will cut onsite electrical installation times and waste, providing a pre-assembled power distribution and lighting system on time and within budget as part of the overall multi-million pound build programme.

All the modular components will be produced and quality checked and tested at the company’s Durham manufacturing facility before being supplied to site ready for installation.

Dave Lewis, Managing Director, said that the use of prefabricated connectors and pre-assembled cables delivers significant improvements over hard wired systems, reducing onsite installation times by up to 70%. Lewis added: “The benefits of modular wiring systems are being recognised for BSF and other major construction and building projects where the electrical wiring installation often has to be completed within a very tight time window. Our systems enable electrical contractors to complete even the most complex installations quicker and more efficient than ever before.”

Apex modular wiring systems can also provide improved health and safety because they minimise the amount of time contractors are required to work at height while also reducing the need for onsite cable and conduit cutting tools which can cause accidents.

Jim Marner, National Pre-Construction Director at SES, stated: “Modular wiring is a superb build methodology that we will continue to design and install into our projects. The off-site manufactured wiring solution allows us to carry out smart engineering and co-ordination at the front end avoiding the problems often associated with installing a traditional hard wired system on a construction site.”
