Council see the light, and save half a million
A local authority in London is expected to save around £500,000 every year following its switch to LEDs.
Around 24,000 existing lights in Ealing will be replaced with energy efficient LED lanterns by energy firm SSE as part of its maintenance programme.
Ealing Council is investing £6 million in the project but SSE Enterprise Lighting claims the switch will result in savings of between 43% and 50% – around £400,000 on the annual street lighting electricity bill.
The local authority will also save around £100,000 a year in maintenance costs as LEDs are expected to be more reliable and last longer.
Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment said: “Everyone wants to save money on their energy bills and given the significant savings we have to make, this deal is a no-brainer with better lighting and significant savings for the council and residents.”
All the new lights are expected to be installed by October next year.
