ABB drives cut £25,000 off energy costs for asphalt plant (08 November 2010)
Over £25,000 of energy costs per year are being saved by an asphalt production plant following the fitting of ABB variable speed drives.
Express Asphalt, a subsidiary of Aggregate Industries, produces 40,000 tonnes of asphalt a year at its depot in Darwen, near Blackburn, Lancashire, mainly for local authorities and utility contractors.

Kemira Chemicals of Bradford makes special polymers for use in the water treatment industries. During the manufacturing process the polymers go through a chemical reaction on a continuously moving conveyor belt. During this part of the process, it is desirable that the polymers do not come into contact with the conveyor belt, as this creates process problems.

VSD swappage scheme aids ISO14001 compliance (05 July 2010)
The new ABB swappage scheme is supported by a recycling programme that this year recycled 13 tonnes of waste variable speed drives, recovering over 90% of their component materials by weight. The ABB swappage scheme offers at least 17.5% off the list price of a new ABB drive and will swap out incumbent drives from any manufacturer. Once the drive has been removed for recycling, ABB issues a certificate that can be used for environmental audits by end users complying with ISO 14001.

ABB agree supply deal with Nuaire (12 January 2010)
ABB has signed a deal with Nuaire Ltd to supply variable speed drives for its range of fans.
Nuaire, based in South Wales, manufactures the largest range of ventilation products and air handling units in the UK. This will now be complimented by ABB standard drives and ABB standard drives for HVAC which are available in power ratings from 0.75 to 90kW, with larger drives available on request.

Driving Down Costs (07 April 2009)
Installing an ABB industrial drive has resulted in a 70% energy saving on a hydraulic system for steel manufacturer Corus Colors at Deeside. The hydraulic system used during the trial is located on a production line used for retreating and inspecting strip material, driving actuators and web guiding systems in a 24-hour process.

The UK’s biggest cement manufacturer has achieved 100% reliability of its cement kiln preheater fans, following the installation of two 1.8 MW ABB drives.Lafarge Cement’s plant at Hope in Derbyshire produces 1.2 million tonnes of cement a year. The plant was suffering reliability problems on the pre-heaters due to the obsolete slip-ring motors and control system used to drive the fans.
