A ‘business tool box’

Develop Training has launched a one of a kind new support service for independent traders across the board, including electricians.

The service, called ‘Business Tool Box’ is a series of free monthly events hosted by Develop at its Derby training site on the last Saturday of every month. Having been pleased with the initial event held recently, Develop is planning another drop-in session for the end of May.

Independent tradesmen have to operate as if they were an entire company, not only being experts in their own field but also good at marketing, bookkeeping and customer service. But services and support specifically for them is limited.

As Jim Donnelly, Network, Construction and Projects Manager at Develop Training commented: “Each Saturday session is set up as a drop-in where tradesmen can come and pop in and stay for as long as they like. We know they don’t have a lot of time, and time is money. This is why we have focussed our next session on company finances, looking at book keeping and accounts, complying with the VAT regulations and how best to work with your bank manager. With our experience and network of contacts we think we are ideally placed to provide broader support. It is our intention to help and support the tradesmen in the local area to become even more successful. We are getting some positive feedback about the event and all the thoughts and comments are helping us to fine-tune the service. With that in mind, we hope to have finance experts with us at the next session to better field those obscure questions that tradesmen may have.”

Develop has five regional Training Centres across the UK including Derby, which is also their HQ. If successful the plan is to extend Business Tool Box across Develop’s other sites.

The next session, called ‘Money, money, money’, will take place on Saturday 26 May.
