Eight 'Big Ticks' for EDF Energy

EDF Energy has achieved its best-ever result in the Business in the Community (BITC) Awards for Excellence. The company, Britain’s largest producer of low carbon electricity, won eight ‘Big Ticks’ in different categories, with three entries also shortlisted as National Examples of Excellence, including a shortlisting for the top award of Responsible Business of the Year.

Awards for Excellence identify companies that have had a positive impact on the environment and society, as well as on their own business. The aim of the awards programme, which is independent and peer-assessed, is to showcase the best of responsible business in action. EDF Energy’s previous best performance was in 2009 when it won seven Big Ticks. In 2011 the company was handed five awards.

Four of EDF Energy’s successes this year were for new submissions in the following categories:
• Responsible Business of the Year, for EDF Energy’s journey towards a low-carbon economy. The company is one of only five businesses shortlisted for this award.
• Building Stronger Communities, for EDF’s energy advice development project with the Citizens Advice Bureau. The company’s partnership with CAB has also been shortlisted for the National Example of Excellence in this category.
• Environmental Leadership, for EDF Energy’s approach to environmental leadership and management, including work with customers, on biodiversity protection and on education. The company was also shortlisted for the National Example of Excellence in this award.
• Education, for EDF Energy’s programme for greener schools, the Pod, run in partnership with EcoSchools. The programme is estimated to have engaged six million young people in sustainability since it was launched in 2008.

EDF Energy also received re-accreditations for ongoing work and achievements in the following categories:
• Ways2Work Award (for delivering sustainable travel options)
• Rural Action Award (for strengthening relationships with the communities surrounding the company’s eight nuclear power stations)
• Workwell Award (for building wellbeing and resilience among employees)
• Skills in the Workplace Award (for building a culture of learning and excellence in the nuclear industry)

Vincent de Rivaz (pictured), Chief Executive of EDF Energy, said: “This is our best ever performance in these awards and terrific recognition of EDF Energy’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practice. I congratulate the many individuals who made this possible. This is further evidence of the commitment and dedication demonstrated in recent years by all our employees and partners on our shared journey towards a sustainable future. These awards are testimony to the great work being done every day across EDF Energy and with the communities and partners who we work with.”

Stephen Howard, Chief Executive, Business in the Community added: “I congratulate EDF Energy on achieving their Big Ticks. There has never been a better time to showcase that business can be a force for good – for the mutual benefit of both business and the communities in which they operate. Our Awards for Excellence are all about celebrating responsible business and EDF Energy has demonstrated that they can have a positive impact on society and people without losing focus on their business.”

Results of the overall category winners will be announced at a BITC Gala Dinner on 27 June attended by HRH The Prince of Wales, who will be joined by double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes and Paralympian gold medallist Liz Johnson, a member of Team EDF.
