SummitSkills available to discuss electrical industry issues

SummitSkills exhibits at a number of trade exhibitions around the UK, including Electrex 2010, where, on stand E502, visitors will be able to find out more about skills initiatives to benefit their business or to share ideas and opinions affecting the electrical industry.

Summit Skills recently posted information about the recent changes to the final assessment that electrical apprentices undergo to become fully-fledged electricians was changed.

Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2) is an electrical competency-based assessment that has been the industry’s benchmark for occupational competence since 1985. As standards have become more demanding, AM2 must reflect this.

SummitSkills worked closely with National Electrical Training (NET), a registered pan-UK industry training charity which owns and licenses the Assessment of Occupational Competence for the electrical installation industry. In consultation with the sector, we have both ensured that the assessment requirements for AM2 reflect the industry’s National Occupational Standards (NOS).

AM2 will not only be a mandatory requirement of the advanced apprenticeship framework, it will also be an integral part of the assessment requirements for the new electrical installation qualification developed for the Qualifications Credit Framework. SummitSkills will have an ongoing responsibility to ensure that the revised assessment continues to reflect the NOS for the industry. We are particularly pleased that the design of the new test incorporates a sustainable energy system.

The electrical industry has thrown its full weight behind the new AM2. The Joint Industry Board (JIB), Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA), Electrotechnical Assessment Scheme (EAS) Management Committee and SummitSkills have all backed the new assessment, recognising it as the electrical industry’s benchmark for an individual’s competence.

Trevor Hill, SummitSkills' development manager said: "The industry’s contribution to the updating of this electrotechnical competence assessment has been incredibly positive. The experience and advice of those currently in the industry, in roles at different levels, was used to ensure that the AM2 reflects the skills and knowledge needed by to-day’s electricians."
