Help needed to progress electricians’ careers
The views of electricians, particularly those who have recently completed their apprenticeships or who are in the final year of their electrotechnical apprenticeship, are in demand for a new research study that aims to identify what may be preventing electricians from advancing their careers further to achieve ‘technician’ status.
SummitSkills, the sector skills council for building services engineering, is backing the research, which is being led by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The project is also being supported by the Joint Industry Board, Electrical Contractors Association, Unite, the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the Engineering Council. It will involve telephone interviews and small discussion groups between May and July.
Keith Marshall OBE, Chief Executive of SummitSkills (pictured), said: “If you are working in the electrotechnical industry, sharing experiences from your own career could help future electricians and electrical contractors to fulfil their potential. By learning from the barriers that have already been encountered and overcome we hope to be able to clear the way for our future workforce of skilled professionals to fulfil their potential.”
Findings from the study will be collated into a report that the IET and its partners plan to share with the Government, to help inform national policy on training and skills development.
