A healthy appetite for education
The electrical industry’s appetite for sustainable learning and education is on the rise, according to Schneider Electric.
Figures from the company’s revolutionary Energy University web-based learning tool show the site is growing at an unprecedented rate with over 1,500 people in the UK registering in the last year alone.
The statistics offer an insightful glimpse into the emerging requirements of those working in the electrical sector. To date, the most popular topics accessed through the site include ‘Understanding Energy Efficiency Fundamentals’, ‘Introduction to Lighting Basics’ and ‘Energy Audits’.
Interestingly, of those participating, nearly a third (30%) are managers, 17% are at director level and a further 17% work as consultants; illustrating how sustainable learning is required at every career level. Looking at job functions, 25% come from an engineering background, 15% are electricians and 9% work in facilities management.
The figures also show that 92% of entrants are male and only 8% are female, highlighting the lack of women working in the industry. As for the most energy savvy cities, London tops the poll for the most candidates, followed by Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow.
Commenting on the success of Energy University, Louise Smith, Customer Marketing Manager for contractors, said: “The energy management task can be a daunting one. With so many new green technologies launching all the time, coupled with ever increasing legislation, it can hard to know where to begin and all too often businesses are losing out on environmental and financial savings through lack of awareness.

The comprehensive website incorporates more than fifty courses, from energy efficiency fundamentals through to more complex issues, such as measuring and benchmarking energy performance.
